Perfecting the Color Scheme for Your Home

Last week, we discussed how to create the perfect color palette for your home. There were lots of great tips on how to find inspiration and a few rules to get you started. This week, I want to focus on perfecting the color scheme for your home.

When initially looking at colors to put together, consider your color swatches in natural bright light from a north-facing window. The effects of changing sunlight will be minimized. Summer is a great time of year to paint in the Pacific Northwest. Take advantage of the beautiful sunshine!

Once you have set the direction of the color scheme for your home, consider the color swatches within each room and in all the types of lights that the room experiences. You will find that the color changes with the light.

Once you have narrowed down the color palette using your smaller swatches, paint the wall using a large sample of the colors. Undertones not apparent in a small swatch are more apparent in a larger sample. For instance, a beige that looks like a perfectly balanced neutral in a small swatch can show a pink undertone once seen in a larger sample.

Paint at least a 3′ x 4′ section of the room’s wall with a small amount of paint. Benjamin Moore offers a minimum sample bottle to test many of the colors in your space.

Next week, I will share some of my best color tips! Be sure to check back and if you are ready to perfect the color scheme for your home, then contact us today to get started with a free one-hour consultation.
